Name |
Pierre Gauthier dit Saguingoria |
- Name Variation: Surname spelled Gautier and Gauthier, as well as Gaultier.
The additional part of Pierre's surname 'dit Saguingoria' is a disputed mystery between genealogists and historians. Pierre did not start to use this name before 1671, some suggest it was a nickname that held significant value or it would not have been used by Priests and on legal documents. It could have related to his ties with the Algonquin in the area, or his adoption of the Saguirou boys.
- Name Variation: Surname spelled Saguingoria, potentially referring to the surname, 'Saguirou' of Joseph Saguirou who's sons Pierre may have adopted in 1674. Name also noted as having been spelled 'Sagourou', 'Saguinghorra', 'Saquingoira' and 'Sakingoara'. No efforts in translation have been successful thus far.

- 4-5 Aug 1689 The Lachine Massacre
A part of the Beaver Wars, the Lachine Massacre occurred when 1500 Mohawk warriors staged a surprise attack on the 375 settlers of Lachine, New France. The basis for the attack was the discontent of indigenous peoples with the influx of French people, and was encouraged by New English settlers. Only 3 Mohawk warriors were killed, while 72 French settlers, most of them civilians, lost their lives either as a direct result of the conflict or after it, in captivity. Over 100 prisoners were taken to Iroquois villages and used as slaves, were tortured or executed. Some young children and women were adopted into Native families. Rather than attack the Mohawk, French forces that had initially been sent to defend the settlement were recalled. There were numerous skirmishes that followed but peace negotiations eventually began in early 1690.
