    • Note: According to the Genealogy compiled by Lawrence Barkwell, Coordinator of the Métis Heritage and History Research Louis Riel Institute, Francois Delonais married Marguerite Descoteaux 4 Sep 1871.
Francois says his parents are Joseph Lyonnais and the late Isabelle Henry, suggesting that living Josephte Susan Henry is not his mother, either this was recorded in error using 'Isabelle' as his Mother's name like his wife, or perhaps his father was previously married to his wife's sister. There is no indication that Joseph was previously married.
    • From the Metis Homeland: It's Settlements and Communities compiled by Lawrence Barkwell 2016.
Clemence Gourneau Berger recorded his memory in the Lewistown Daily News, 31 December 1943, referring tot he families that relocated to Judith Basin, Montana.
'Of the twenty-five families who came here with us were I recall, all the Pierre Berger family, Fleurys, LaFountains, Doneys, Fayants, Wilkies, Ledoux and Ben Cline. Our party all settled along the foothills of the Judith Mountains. One of the party named LaFountain, who was blind, settled on Blind Breed Creek, which got its name from the poor unfortunate. Later the Doneys and Fayants moved and settled in the area of Fort Maginnis.'
    • Note: Confirmation of the identity of Mary Madeline Doney as a child of Josephte Henry and Joseph Lionais dit Delaunay comes from the obituary of John Marie Doney, where it notes his living sister 'Mrs. Roberts of Whitefish' in 1939.
    • "Most members of the Spring Creek families spoke some English; never-theless, what primarily set them apart was language. According to the 1900 census, 224 Métis fami-lies listed as white spoke English. Yet many families, whether they knew English or not, still used the 'old language'. Furthermore, their English was often heavily accented and distinguished by a non-English sentence structure. Longtime resident Walt Coburn recalled that the Métis families south of Fort Belknap in the 1920s and 1930s, including former Spring Creek families such as the Doneys, 'spoke a strange blended mixture of Cree and French and cow-country America.' This blend set the Métis apart and sometimes made them an object of ridicule. As noted earlier, popular central-Montana cowboy Teddy Blue Abbott made good-natured fun, in the harsh Montana style, of 'those French breeds' use of English, John Moran, Mose LaTreille (LaTray), and Joe Doney (the later two listed as English speakers in the 1900 census) all suffered Abbott's humor."

    Census
    1843RedRiverCen-JosephDaunais.jpg
    1843RedRiverCen-JosephDaunais.jpg
Household number 155. Joseph Daunay appears on the 1843 Red River Settlement census. He was born in Rupert's Land and was Roman Catholic. He lived with his wife and two females who are listed as above 15 years of age. (Estimated sisters of either Josephte or Joseph, or a transcription error by Census taker, suggesting the girls were under 15 years of age as they would have to be with two parents born about 1820.)
At that time he has a house, stable, barn, 3 horses, three mares, two cows, three calves, 7 pigs, one plough, two harrows, six carts, one canoe and 12 acres.

This census is confirmed as being correct by the Genealogy compiled by Lawrence Barkwell, Coordinator of the Métis Heritage and History Research Louis Riel Institute. Either this Census is correct and the females were sisters, or they were put in the wrong column, or Joseph was noted as 'Dumaes' who is also noted on this page. If 'Joseph Dumaes' is correct, the two unnamed sisters or daughters did not exist.

  • Notes
    • "Clothing, for the older generation, also remained distinctive. Gregory Doney and Mary Ernestine Wells Fleury, for example, wore traditional Métis clothing well into the twentieth century. Mary Ernestine's descen-dants remember her always wearing a long dark dress, gray shawl, and large cross until her death, in 1952. For many of those years she also work moc-casins. Walt Coburn, who ranched south of Fort Belknap, remembered Gregory Doney wearing brightly quilled moccasins and 'a gay colored Hudson's Bay voyageur sash knotted around his middle... [with] the long fringes swinging."
