    Notes
    • In the 1851 Canadian Census Joseph Octave Canuel (24 years of age, brother to Jules Canuel) is noted as a farmer with three young children: Caroline, Pierre and Hippolyte, later known as Polite. We estimate that Joseph Octave married around 1848, and that his wife died after the birth of Hippolyte, which was about 1851-1852 (The 1851 Census wasn't taken until 1852 but she is not on it). In all subsequent records and census the children are noted as the children of Modeste Dube and Jules Canuel, while brother Joseph Octave is not found on record again. Supposition that Joseph Octave and his wife died, and Modeste and Jules raised their children as their own.

    • Biography:
Auguste Canuel | Angus Campbell is said to have been Mi'kaq by McKenna relatives. His son, Leo, was said to have resembled him physically, while all of his daughters resembled Josephine and had Caucasian features. Family accounts recall him to be a tall thin man with longer dark hair and grey eyes.
Leo Canuel's niece remembered when he would come to visit them, neighbourhood children would run ahead of him calling out that 'Tonto was coming!' suggesting their association with him and the character from the 'Lone Ranger'.

It is suggested that he anglicized his name upon arrival in Ontario, however in the tradition of his descendants reciting his name, they were all well versed in saying 'His name was Campbell, but you pronounce it 'Cam-U-Elle'.

He had the occupation of trapper and trader (From Barrie to Muskoka), boarding house owner and engineer for Hollinger Mines. Although his heritage has been virtually untraceable, it is noted that Auguste's parents Modeste Dube and Jules Canuel adopted at least three of his siblings from Jules' brother, Joseph Octave and raised them as their own children.
He was noted as the first child of his parents, although they were married 5 years before his birth.

Memories of Angus include a story of him leaving the family boarding house to aid in fighting a forest fire and not returning. Josephine and his daughters had thought he was dead and were deeply grieving. Weeks after his disappearance, a starved, filthy dirty man with a full beard and ragged clothes was seen walking towards the house by the women on the front porch who panicked thinking he was a wayward stranger.
Angus had returned to his family, much to their complete shock, and was hardly recognizable. Angus claimed to have be fighting the fire when it surrounded him. In order to survive he buried himself in the earth, ate bugs and breathed through reeds and did not come out again until the heat in the air and earth had cooled.
