  • Name Reason Baker
    • Not to be confused with 'Reason Baker', son of Mary Wells and Esaias Baker who was born in 1796 and married Pheobe Giles on 12 Nov 1814 in Madison Kentucky. Esaias Baker was the son of Elizabeth Dorsey and Maurice Morris Baker III, so the 'Reason Baker' boys were cousins.

Marriage bond for Eleanor Roberts and Reason 'Resin' Baker. Record is apparently not dated, although both surrounding records are dated from 29 Jul 1782 - 20 Dec 1782. Given Reason II's estimated year of birth about 1792, an approximate date of 1782 is valid. Bondsman was Obed Baker.

    • 'This is my personal research I have done for 4 years on Thomas Van Trump Baker. What always stumped me was the name Van Trump until I started learning about the war of 1812 and which Bakers were involved. There was a Col Van Trump out of Ohio at the start of the fighting. 3 Bakers served or were in contact with Col Van Trump. Doing other research on Baker in Kentucky in 1820 I searched threw hundreds of listing and narrowed out 6 that had a male child under 10 living at that time. Of the 6 listed the 3 I found during the war search were on this list. So it was a matter of searching Kentucky records for each county until I found a possible match. Of all these records I searched threw I found the only possible link. Reason Baker JR was married in 1812 and his Father Reason Baker SR had contact with Col Van Trump. My best guess is that Reason SR was saved or protected and the result was the naming of the first child of his son after him. That is how Thomas got his middle name of Van Trump. This also fits family stories I was told as a child. I was told for years that we had indian (Cherokee) in our family. Thomas's mother was half Cherokee threw the Van Winkle family.
Thomas was born about 1812. Thomas Baker ... He passed away in 1928.'

    1812War-RezinBaker.jpg
1812 US War record of Military Service for Rezin Baker. It's Brian Baker's theory, that we completely agree with, that during the War of 1812 Private Reason Baker II and his father, Reason Baker I, had contact with Colonel Van Trump, enough to name his first born son after him.
